Electrical diagnostic tools

Last updated · OBDCode UK editorial

These tools are not interchangeable. A multimeter answers many supply, earth and continuity questions. A powered circuit probe can energise a wire. A handheld oscilloscope is only useful when waveform shape or timing matters. Two specialist shops have passed the current check.

Can buy

Two shops have passed the current check: an Autel PowerScan PS100 circuit tester, and a BSIDE OT3 10 MHz handheld oscilloscope. A powered probe is a technician tool, not a first buy for reading a code.

How to choose

Define the measurement first. A multimeter or test light can answer many supply, earth and continuity questions. A powered circuit probe is for trained users who understand when a circuit may safely be energised. An oscilloscope is useful only when waveform shape or timing matters — it is not a first tool for “what does this code mean?”

Check the tool’s voltage category, input limits, lead fusing and vehicle-system compatibility. Prefer back-probing or manufacturer-approved breakout methods over piercing insulation. The manufacturer name (Autel, BSIDE, or the real scope brand) must appear on the shop page. Do not treat a shop name as the factory.

Selection checklist

  • Whether the job needs voltage, continuity, controlled power or a waveform
  • Input limits, fused leads and 12V/24V compatibility
  • A wiring diagram and a safe test point for the exact vehicle

You may not need to buy this if…

  • A basic multimeter or test light can answer the question safely
  • You do not have a wiring diagram or cannot identify the circuit
  • The circuit involves airbags, pretensioners, hybrid or EV high voltage
  • You have not used a scope before and the job is not a waveform diagnosis
Safety notes

A powered probe can energise a component or wire. Never apply power to airbag, pretensioner or other pyrotechnic circuits, and do not probe orange hybrid or EV high-voltage wiring. Keep leads clear of belts, fans and hot parts. Use fused leads on a scope and stay clear of ignition HT leads. If the circuit or test point is uncertain, stop and use a qualified auto electrician.
