Which OBD2 scanner should you buy? (UK, 2026)

For most UK drivers: a basic code reader (£20–£40) answers “why is my light on?”. Step up to a full-system scanner (£60–£200) if you want live data, ABS/airbag modules and service resets. Bluetooth dongles are the cheapest route but depend on app quality.

The three tiers

1. Basic code readers (£20–£40)

Plug in, read the P-code, clear it after the repair. That covers the engine light — the thing that fails MOTs. What they don’t do: ABS, airbag or transmission modules, live sensor graphs, or service functions.

2. Full-system scanners (£60–£200)

Read every module (engine, ABS, airbag, gearbox, battery management), show live data — the fuel trims and sensor voltages our code pages reference in their diagnosis steps — and run service resets (oil light, electronic parking brake, DPF regeneration). This is the tier that replaces a £60 diagnostic visit.

3. Bluetooth dongles + apps (£10–£100)

A small plug that pairs with your phone. Capability depends entirely on the app; brand-specific apps unlock deep functions on the right car. Great as a permanent “health monitor” left in the socket.

Features that actually matter

  • Full-system coverage — an ABS or airbag lamp is an MOT fail; engine-only readers can’t see them.
  • Live data — swapping parts without live data is guesswork.
  • Freeze frame — shows conditions when the fault triggered (intermittent faults).
  • Battery/charging test — flat batteries cause more UK breakdowns than any fault code. A dedicated battery tester is a worthwhite companion.
  • Updates without subscription — check before buying; some brands charge yearly.
