The resting voltage chart

Why voltage alone isn’t enough
Voltage shows charge, not capacity. An old battery can read 12.6V and still collapse under the load of a starter motor on a 2°C morning. That’s what a battery tester measures: cold cranking amps (CCA) against the battery’s rating. Ten seconds, no disconnection needed, and you get a definitive “replace or keep” answer instead of a guess.
Check the alternator while you’re there
Engine running, lights on: you should see 13.8–14.6V at the battery. Under 13.5V and the battery is being under-charged (short journeys make this worse); over 15V risks cooking it. Modern smart alternators vary voltage deliberately — a tester that logs while you drive removes the doubt.
Signs your battery is dying

Battery warning lights and the MOT
The battery itself isn’t MOT-tested, but insecure batteries and damaged wiring are checked — and a weak battery triggers phantom fault codes across the car’s modules that do put warning lamps on.
