Car battery health check: safe observations first

Dashboard lights or one voltage reading do not by themselves prove that a 12-volt battery needs replacing.
Before any test
Use the vehicle handbook to identify the designated 12-volt battery or assistance points. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or traction-battery components on a hybrid or EV.
- Do not test, charge or jump a battery that is swollen, leaking, frozen, damaged or unusually hot.
- Keep flames and sparks away and stop if a cable becomes hot or there is a burning smell.
- Record slow cranking, warning messages, recent discharge and how long the vehicle stood.
What a garage should check
Ask for battery state-of-health or capacity evidence after an appropriate charge, plus cranking, charging and cable checks. A low state of charge can have a cause elsewhere in the vehicle.
