UK petrol, diesel and hybrid cars that show an engine management light (also called the malfunction indicator lamp or MIL).

Here, MOT means the Great Britain test for England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate vehicle-testing system.

Use another route when

  • Flashing engine management light with judder — use the flashing-and-juddering guide; treat as do not drive.
  • Kit cars, amateur-built vehicles and American pickups that DVSA does not require to have an engine MIL.
  • Airbag, brake, battery or tyre-pressure lamps — those are different warnings.

Can you keep driving?

A steady amber light with otherwise normal driving: drive with caution and arrange a check within 24–72 hours. Stop when safe if the light flashes, the engine judders, power drops, temperature rises, or you smell fuel or exhaust in the cabin.

Look at the lamp: steady or flashing. Note any other warning lights and how the car drives.

Stop and escalate when

  • The engine management light is flashing
  • The engine judders, cuts, or loses power
  • Temperature warning, fuel smell, or exhaust in the cabin

What the symptom may mean

These are decision branches, not a diagnosis or a UK frequency ranking.

A stored engine or emissions-management fault — the lamp is a messenger, not a diagnosis. A steady light usually means the computer has stored at least one fault code. The part that failed is unknown until the code is read. Start with the lamp-state check, then scan if it is safe. Look up the exact code; do not buy a part from the lamp alone.

An active misfire (flashing lamp) — a flashing engine management light is reserved for a misfire severe enough to send unburnt fuel into the exhaust, where it can damage the catalytic converter. This page does not treat that as a drive-on fault. Stop when safe. Use the flashing-and-juddering guide and misfire codes such as P0300.

A sensor, wiring or emissions-component issue — after a scan, many steady-lamp codes point at oxygen sensors, catalyst efficiency, or related wiring. Those are possible explanations, not a ranked parts list. Look up the stored code. Do not replace a catalyst or sensor because the lamp is on.

A fuelling, evaporative or diesel aftertreatment issue — a seated filler cap, a lean-mixture code, or a diesel particulate-filter warning can share the same lamp. None of these is the default cause. Use the code and any extra lamps. Diesel DPF lights have their own guide.

Observation-level checks

See if the light is steady or flashing. With the car stationary, look at the engine management light. Note whether it is steady or flashing, whether any other warning lamps are on, and whether the engine sounds or feels normal. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Other red lamps or overheating override this page.

Read the stored code if it is safe. If the light is steady and the car is parked outdoors, plug a basic OBD-II reader into the diagnostic socket. Write down every code and freeze-frame. Do not clear the codes. The code tells you which system to look up next. It is not a confirmed failed part.

Stop if the light is flashing, you would need to go under the car, or you cannot read codes without running the engine in a closed garage.

MOT relevance

A lit or inoperative engine MIL is a Major MOT fail on vehicles that must have one.

On vehicles that must have an engine MIL, testers switch on the ignition and check that the lamp comes on, then goes out (some cars need the engine started). If the lamp stays on, or does not work at all, DVSA records “Engine MIL inoperative or indicating a malfunction” as a Major defect. That inspection has been in the car MOT since 20 May 2018. It does not mean every car first used before those fitment dates is exempt from other emissions checks.

Petrol cars (including hybrids) with no more than eight passenger seats, first used on or after 1 July 2003; larger petrol passenger vehicles, gas/bi-fuel, and diesel (including hybrids) from 1 July 2008, as listed in the manual. Kit cars, amateur-built vehicles and American pickups are not required to be fitted with an engine MIL.

Clearing a code before an MOT

The Great Britain MOT procedure cited here does not list using an OBD2 scanner to clear a code as a separate defect. That is a narrow reading of the inspection rules. It is not a general right to hide a known fault or drive an unroadworthy car.

Clearing does not repair a misfire, air leak, wiring fault, catalyst or diesel aftertreatment problem. It can erase freeze-frame and other diagnostic context the garage needs.

Save every code, its status and freeze-frame first. Repair the cause. Then check that the lamp comes on with ignition and goes off correctly, and that emissions are within the applicable limits where that test applies.

A green scanner screen is not an MOT result.

Readiness monitors after a clear

A generic not-ready or unset readiness status is not listed as a separate defect in the cited section 8 procedure. That does not guarantee a pass.

The car can still fail if:

  • the applicable engine light indicates a malfunction
  • the emissions result is outside its limit
  • the emissions test cannot be completed
  • another Major or Dangerous defect becomes clear

On a partial retest the tester rechecks the previously failed item or items and anything that may have been affected by the repair. A new Major or Dangerous defect requires a new VT30.

Use readiness as evidence of what the car has checked since clearing. It is not an MOT certificate.

Retest routes and fees

These public GOV.UK rules apply in England, Scotland and Wales.

If you leave the vehicle at the same test centre for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, only a partial retest is needed and there is no fee.

If you take the vehicle away and your current MOT remains valid, GOV.UK says you may do so where no Dangerous defect was listed, provided the vehicle remains roadworthy. If the MOT has expired, limited journeys include taking it to have the failed defects fixed or to a pre-arranged MOT appointment. The vehicle must still meet minimum roadworthiness standards.

A free next-working-day partial retest at the same centre applies only to the listed items. That list includes “lamps (excluding headlamp aim)” but does not separately name the engine MIL. The MIL is inspected under DVSA manual section 8.2. Ask the station how it will treat the recorded failure before taking the car away.

If you take the vehicle away and return to the same centre within 10 working days, you may still get a partial retest and you can be charged a partial retest fee. In all other cases you need a full retest and the full MOT fee.

The maximum full fee for a qualifying car is £54.85. A station may charge less. VAT is not added to the fee.

  • Number plate
