P0420 is a generic (SAE standard) powertrain code reported by your car’s engine control unit. It sits in the P04xx block, which covers auxiliary emission controls. The stored description is “Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold”. The code itself tells you which circuit or system tripped the fault — not always the exact part that failed.

How to diagnose P0420 yourself

  1. Confirm P0420 and freeze-frame: Scan with an OBD-II reader while the car is stationary, outdoors. Note whether P0420 is current or pending, freeze-frame load, and any companion codes. Stop if: The engine management light is flashing, the engine is overheating, or you smell strong exhaust in the cabin.

    Park safely and switch off before locating the socket. Its position varies, so use the vehicle handbook and never force or dismantle trim.
  2. Listen for an exhaust leak (cold, no crawl): With a cold engine, stand beside the car — not underneath and not on a jack. Start it in open air and listen or feel from the side for a tick or blow ahead of the catalyst. Stop if: You would need to go under the car, the exhaust is hot, or fumes enter the cabin. Do not jack the car for this check.
  3. Compare upstream and downstream oxygen data: On a basic live-data scanner, compare the pre-catalyst and post-catalyst oxygen (or AFR) sensor traces at idle in open air. Do not remove sensors. Stop if: You also have flashing-light misfire, overheating, or you cannot read live data without running the engine in a closed garage.
