Lifetime Scanner Updates: Worth the Premium at £200–£400?
Last reviewed · OBDCode UK editorial
This guide uses dated public manufacturer pages and retailer listings. It does not claim hands-on vehicle testing or exact post-expiry behaviour where those checks were not available.
Prices shown were available on 7 September 2026. Checkout totals and software terms may change. This guide uses public product information and retailer listings; it does not include hands-on vehicle results.
Short answer: calculate the break-even point first
There is no universal winner. An authorised UK iCarsoft distributor listed the CR MAX BT at £359.90 including VAT and delivery, with lifetime UK software updates. AutelStore listed an MK808BT/MK808Z-BT-family device at £359 and an MK808BT renewal at £101, producing a £359/£460/£561 listed-price projection over one, two and three years. That is not a confirmed delivered total because VAT and mixed suffix naming remain unresolved. Launch includes two update years, while Ross-Tech and Foxwell are narrower-coverage alternatives.
Add a renewal only when the included term has ended. A product with one included year may need its first renewal for year two; a product with two included years may not need one until year three. Only count renewals you would actually buy.
What “lifetime updates” includes, and what it excludes
“Lifetime” is a licence term, not a guarantee that every future car, module or online service will work. It may cover downloads while the device remains supported, one selected vehicle make, or an entitlement tied to a serial number, account, region or authorised sales channel.
- Free updates do not guarantee every future vehicle or function.
- Security-gateway access and online coding may be separate services.
- Seller-specific UK support may not apply to a grey import.
- A make-specific package is not equivalent to all-makes coverage.
The iCarsoft manufacturer page states lifetime Wi-Fi updates, no subscription and more than 58 makes. An authorised UK distributor listing states lifetime UK software updates, UK support and no customs charges for its stock.
The Foxwell NT710 page states lifetime updates but includes one selected make or manufacturer-group software package. Exact coverage depends on the selected package, and additional vehicle software is sold separately.
An official Autel US store article says installed diagnostic and service capabilities remain after subscription expiry, while updates and some server-backed functions stop. This is published guidance, not a hands-on UK MK808BT expiry test. Launch post-expiry behaviour remains unverified from exact official product documentation.
Published UK prices and one-, two- and three-year costs
These packages are not perfectly like-for-like. A displayed price is a dated listing reference, not necessarily a UK delivered total. “Cannot calculate from the published UK terms” means that a required UK price, tax status or matching licence term was unavailable.

The Autel hardware and renewal page cross-link, but the hardware page mixes MK808BT and MK808Z-BT naming. This is therefore a listed-price projection, not a confirmed VAT-inclusive ownership total:
Year 1: £359 Year 2: £359 + £101 = £460 Year 3: £359 + £101 + £101 = £561
The renewal page also says serial eligibility applies and activation may take three working days.
*Listed-price projections are not confirmed delivered totals where VAT, import charges or marketplace delivery remain unresolved.
Scanner-by-scanner buying implications
Autel MaxiCOM MK808BT
The retailer pages show a £359 MK808BT-family device and a £101 one-year renewal. They cross-link, but the hardware page also identifies the product as MK808Z-BT. Confirm the exact suffix, serial eligibility and VAT treatment before relying on the projection. Autel's published US guidance says installed diagnostic and service functions remain after expiry, while updates and some server-backed functions stop; this has not been physically verified on the UK-market unit.
iCarsoft CR MAX BT
The £359.90 authorised UK listing includes VAT and delivery and states lifetime UK updates, warranty and support. The offer was time-limited and low-stock, so recheck it before ordering. The manufacturer describes multi-brand full-system diagnostics, bi-directional control, 50 service functions and optional DoIP. Coding and active tests still vary by vehicle.
Ross-Tech VCDS with HEX-V2
Gendan lists the 3-VIN package with case at £225 including VAT and delivery; interface-only is £222. Ross-Tech's release page lists VCDS 26.9.0, Data Version 20260828 / DS378.0 and an approximately 87 MB installer. Basic scans, DTC clearing and live values are unlimited, while advanced functions consume VIN allocations. Each upgrade from 3 to 10 VINs and 10 to unlimited is £169. SFD service is a separate Beta subscription and SFD2 remains limited.
Launch X431 CRP919E 2.0
The £288 seller listing includes two update years. It quotes US$199 for a later renewal; another seller lists US$165, excludes duties and requires serial eligibility, warning that overseas-dealer devices may be ineligible. These channels cannot be mixed, so year three remains unknown until a tax-inclusive GBP quote is confirmed.
Foxwell NT710
The £229 marketplace quote covers one selected make or manufacturer-group package and seller-stated lifetime updates; VAT and delivery are not confirmed. Foxwell lists extra packages at US$60–$80. Software is serial-bound and non-refundable after authorisation, and some serial prefixes cannot currently add software. A documented transfer path applies only from specified older Foxwell tools to a new NT710 after purchase-record checks, not generally between NT710 units.
Specialist-tool contrast: iCarsoft MT V6 for Shineray
The iCarsoft MT V6 for Shineray states lifetime free updates and no subscription, but its price is on request. Updates use USB through a Windows PC. It is a Shineray motorcycle diagnostic tool, not a multi-brand car scanner.
Its inclusion shows why update duration cannot be judged without coverage scope. No one-, two- or three-year total is shown because a public UK price was not available.
When the premium pays back, and when it does not
A valid comparison requires the same hardware, coverage, region, VIN allowance and online services:
upfront lifetime premium = lifetime-version price - paid-update-version price renewals to break even = ceil(upfront lifetime premium / annual renewal price) cash-flow break-even month = included update months + (renewals to break even - 1) × renewal period months
For example, if one year of updates is included in both versions, a £120 lifetime premium against an £85 annual renewal crosses over at the second annual renewal, or month 24 from purchase:
ceil(£120 / £85) = 2 renewals 12 + (2 - 1) × 12 = month 24 from purchase
Dividing the premium by a monthly equivalent would produce 16.9 months after expiry, but that is not the actual payment crossover when renewals are charged annually in advance.
The published prices in this guide do not provide a like-for-like lifetime and paid-update pair for any of the six products, so a dependable product-specific break-even month cannot be calculated. Compare only dated, same-SKU totals.
OBD Code UK verdict
Compare the ownership total at the year you expect to replace or sell the tool. Pay more for lifetime updates only when the coverage, region and licence restrictions are clear.
Buying checklist: licence expiry, transfer rights and offline use
- Match the complete model name and suffix on the hardware, product page and renewal.
- Confirm the total UK price, including VAT, delivery and import charges.
- Record the included update term and renewal in the same currency.
- Ask what remains available after expiry: DTCs, live data, service functions, reports and online services.
- Check account, serial-number, region and sales-channel restrictions.
- Confirm whether paid software transfers to another owner or replacement device.
- Check VIN, vehicle-count and make-package limits.
- Verify each required function against the exact vehicle.
FAQ
Do lifetime updates cover every future model?
No. They cover the stated update entitlement. Hardware limits, regional software, security access and vehicle-specific support can still restrict future coverage.
Does a scanner stop working when updates expire?
There is no universal answer. Autel's published guidance says installed diagnostic and service capabilities continue, but updates and some server-backed functions stop. That policy has not been hands-on verified for the exact UK unit used in this comparison; check the exact model and region.
Is VCDS directly comparable with a multi-brand tablet?
No. The £225 HEX-V2 package with case is for VW Group vehicles and requires a Windows PC. Basic scans, DTC clearing and live values are unlimited, while advanced functions are limited to three VINs unless the licence is upgraded.
Does the Foxwell NT710 include every vehicle make?
No. The purchase includes one selected make or manufacturer-group software package. Exact coverage depends on the package selected, and additional vehicle software is sold separately.
How should I calculate when lifetime updates pay back?
Subtract the paid-update price from the lifetime price, divide by the matching annual renewal and round up to the next whole renewal. For annual renewals paid in advance, the cash-flow break-even month is the included update period plus one renewal period for each renewal after the first. Compare only options with matching hardware, coverage, region, VIN allowance and online services.
What if a seller cannot state the renewal price?
Treat the long-term cost as unknown. Do not assume the renewal is optional or affordable until the exact model and account terms are confirmed.
Bottom line
The update label alone does not decide value. The CR MAX BT currently has the clearest UK lifetime-cost proposition in this set, but the offer and vehicle coverage still need checking. Autel now has a usable listed-price projection, not a fully confirmed delivered total. Launch needs an eligible, tax-inclusive renewal quote before year three can be compared. Ross-Tech and Foxwell have narrower licence limits, while the MT V6 is motorcycle-specific.
Calculate the cost for the years you expect to own the tool, then verify vehicle functions, licence restrictions and post-expiry behaviour before buying.
