P0102 fault code: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
Last updated · OBDCode UK editorial
Our verified driving guidance for P0102 is: drive with care. If the engine stalls, will not idle, or the light starts flashing, stop and treat it as a different problem.
Can I DIY?
Caution — conditions apply. We do not publish DIY repair or strip-down steps for this code on this page. Read codes and observe only; leave the repair to a qualified garage.
Some checks may be possible for a careful DIY driver with the right tools and a safe place to work. Stop if anything feels beyond your skill or kit.
Never idle in a closed garage to read codes — an open door is not enough. CO is odourless and can kill. Run diagnostics in open air. Headache or nausea with exhaust smell: get fresh air and stop.
What does P0102 mean?
P0102 is a generic (SAE standard) powertrain code reported by your car’s engine control unit. It sits in the P01xx block, which covers fuel and air metering. The stored description is “Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input”. The code itself tells you which circuit or system tripped the fault — not always the exact part that failed.
How to diagnose P0102 yourself
- Confirm P0102 and freeze-frame: With the car stationary in open air, scan the OBD-II port. Record whether P0102 is current or pending, the freeze-frame rpm and load, and any companion codes such as lean-mixture or throttle-sensor faults. Stop if: The engine will not run, the management light is flashing, or you see damaged orange high-voltage cables in the bay.
Park safely and switch off before locating the socket. Its position varies, so use the vehicle handbook and never force or dismantle trim. - Read air-flow live data outdoors: If your scanner shows mass air-flow or calculated load, watch the value with the engine idling outdoors — never in a closed garage. Do not chase a published grams-per-second target; we do not give one. Stop if: You feel dizzy, get a headache, or smell exhaust while idling — switch off, get fresh air, and stop the test.
- Look at the intake tube and MAF plug: When the engine is cold, open the bonnet and look only. Check that the air-filter box lid is latched, the tube to the throttle body is fully seated, and the MAF electrical plug is clicked home. Do not unplug the sensor or spray cleaner. Stop if: The engine is hot, an electric fan may start, or the sensor sits where you would have to force parts aside.
Will P0102 fail an MOT?
If the engine management light stays on, that is a Major defect at MOT until the fault is repaired and the lamp remains off. A P0102 stored in memory is not itself a named MOT item.
