P0130 is a generic (SAE standard) powertrain code reported by your car’s engine control unit. It sits in the P01xx block, which covers fuel and air metering. The stored description is “O2 Sensor Circuit”. The code itself tells you which circuit or system tripped the fault — not always the exact part that failed.
How to diagnose P0130 yourself
- Confirm P0130 and companion codes: Scan outdoors with the car stationary. Record whether P0130 is current or pending, freeze-frame fuel status if shown, and every companion code — especially heater, misfire, or fuel-trim codes. Stop if: You smell exhaust in the cabin, the lamp is flashing, or you feel unwell.
Park safely and switch off before locating the socket. Its position varies, so use the vehicle handbook and never force or dismantle trim. - Watch upstream oxygen-sensor live data: Idle in open air only. On live data, watch the upstream oxygen-sensor voltage or equivalence ratio. Note whether the trace is stuck, flat, missing, or jumping. Do not touch the sensor or exhaust to 'test' heat. Stop if: You would have to idle in a closed garage, crawl under the car, or the engine runs so roughly you cannot hold idle.
- Check for exhaust smell in the cabin: With fresh air on, notice whether exhaust odour, headache, or nausea appears at idle or on a short drive. This is a cabin observation only — do not inspect joints from under the car. Stop if: Anyone in the car has a headache, feels sick, or you can smell exhaust inside. Do not keep driving to 'air it out'.
