UK cars and light vans with a service-brake pedal that has become soft, spongy, slow to return, sinking under normal use or able to travel to the floor.
Use another route when
- Brake squeal or wear warnings with a pedal that still feels normal — those need a separate friction-brake assessment.
- A newly hard pedal or loss of brake assistance — that is a different symptom, but it also needs the vehicle kept off the road and professionally assessed.
- Parking-brake lever, parking-brake pedal or electronic parking-brake control faults.
- Any attempt to diagnose a brake-by-wire, ABS or hydraulic unit internally — this guide provides no such procedure.
Can you keep driving?
Do not drive — arrange recovery. Do not set off again or drive to a garage. If the symptom starts while the vehicle is moving, concentrate on reaching the nearest place of relative safety without continuing the journey, then switch off and call for professional recovery. A pedal that later feels different or a reservoir that looks full does not cancel the Stop decision.
Keep the vehicle stationary. If it is obstructing traffic, use hazard warning lights and follow Highway Code breakdown guidance from a place of relative safety. Do not perform a road test, pump or hold the pedal as a diagnosis, top up fluid as a test, open the hydraulic system or attempt bleeding.
Stop and escalate when
- Any newly soft, spongy, sinking or floor-reaching service-brake pedal — the symptom itself is already a recovery trigger.
- The brake or ABS warning is lit, brake fluid is at or below MIN or not visible, or fresh wetness is visible near the stationary vehicle.
- The change began immediately after brake, wheel, tyre, suspension or ABS work, even if the pedal later seems firmer.
- The vehicle is stopped in live traffic, cannot be moved to relative safety, or occupants cannot leave safely — use the SOS facility or call 999 and follow instructions.
- Never go beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. This guide does not authorise under-vehicle work.
What the symptom may mean
These are decision branches, not a diagnosis or a UK frequency ranking.
- Loss of fluid or pressure from the hydraulic circuit — is one possible explanation. A master cylinder, rigid pipe, flexible hose, connection or wheel-end hydraulic component can leak or fail to contain pressure. Fluid may be visible, hidden on components or absent from the ground, so no puddle does not rule this out.

- An internal hydraulic or control-unit fault — remains possible without visible fluid loss. The system may fail to maintain pressure internally even when the reservoir level looks normal and no external wetness can be seen. Pedal feel alone cannot separate a master-cylinder fault from an ABS, brake-by-wire or other hydraulic-control fault.

- A fault introduced or exposed during recent work — must be considered when the timing matches. A pedal change after work on brakes, wheels, tyres, suspension or an ABS hydraulic component needs the installer’s urgent attention. - Record what the pedal already did (Red observation)
Once the vehicle is safely stopped and switched off, do not press the pedal again for this guide. Write down whether it felt spongy, sank while braking, travelled farther than normal, reached the floor, returned slowly or changed between applications.
What it means: Any of these new behaviours is enough to keep the vehicle off the road. A temporary change in feel cannot prove that braking pressure or reserve travel is safe.

- Record warnings that were already displayed (Green observation)
From the parked driver’s seat, note or photograph any brake, ABS, stability-control or other warning that was displayed when the pedal changed. Do not clear faults, disconnect the battery or cycle the ignition solely to make a warning appear again.
What it means: The exact symbol helps the garage choose a diagnostic route. No warning lamp does not rule out a hydraulic fault and does not make the vehicle safe to drive.

A warning was displayed → preserve the photograph or wording and give it to recovery and the garage.
No warning was seen or remembered → record that honestly; recovery is still required for the pedal symptom.
- Look through the closed reservoir and at the ground (Green observation)
Only if the car is safely parked, switched off and away from moving traffic, look through the outside of a plainly accessible translucent brake-fluid reservoir. Keep the cap fitted. From beside the vehicle, look for fresh wetness on the ground near the wheels or engine bay. Do not touch fluid, remove trim, reach behind a wheel or go underneath.
What it means: Fluid at or below MIN, fluid not visible, or fresh wetness strengthens the concern about hydraulic loss. A level between MIN and MAX and a dry-looking ground do not rule out a hidden or internal fault.

Stop if: The reservoir is not clearly identified or visible from above, the cap would need removing, anything must be touched, or a better view would require reaching behind a wheel or beneath the vehicle.
Fluid is low or not visible, or wetness is present → report exactly what is visible and arrange recovery; do not top up or trace the leak.
Fluid appears between MIN and MAX and no wetness is visible → the no-drive decision remains unchanged; report that observation to the garage.
- Gather the recent-work record (Red observation)
Check invoices, messages or collection notes without touching the vehicle. Record the date, mileage and exact work done on brakes, wheels, tyres, suspension or ABS before the symptom began, plus who carried it out.
What it means: Timing can direct the first professional inspection but does not prove which part or procedure caused the change.

MOT relevance
Do not drive it to an MOT: a service-brake pedal touching the floor has insufficient reserve travel, a Major defect, while several hydraulic leaks are Dangerous defects.
DVSA assesses the defect found, not the word “spongy”. The MOT manual lists insufficient pedal reserve travel, where the pedal touches the floor, as Major. A leaking master cylinder and hydraulic leaks from brake pipes or hose connections are Dangerous; brake fluid that is not visible is also Dangerous. An MOT appointment is not permission to drive a vehicle with this symptom.

Can I drive slowly to a nearby garage?
No. Speed and distance do not prove that the hydraulic system will maintain pressure for the next stop. Leave the vehicle parked and arrange professional recovery.
The pedal feels firmer after several presses. Is it safe now?
No. A temporary change in feel does not verify reserve travel, leak-free hydraulics or braking performance. Do not use repeated pedal presses or a road test as a diagnosis.
Should I top up the brake-fluid reservoir?
Not as a test or remedy for this symptom. Observe only through the closed translucent reservoir if it is plainly accessible. Topping up does not repair a leak or internal pressure loss and can hide useful evidence.
The reservoir looks full and there is no puddle. Can I drive?
No. An internal fault or a hidden leak can exist with a normal-looking level and dry ground. The pedal symptom itself keeps the decision at do not drive and arrange recovery.
