How to check a repair garage before you book: Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Check the repair business and the person who will do specialist work, then get the scope and price in writing. For MOT testing, use the DVSA active-station list only in England, Scotland or Wales. In Northern Ireland the DVA, not repair garages, operates the test-centre network; use nidirect for testing and check any repairer separately. A live directory entry or badge is evidence within that scheme’s stated scope, not a guarantee that a diagnosis or quote is right.

Jurisdiction: Repair-business checks in this guide may be used only where the named directory or register has a current entry. The MOT route is jurisdiction-specific: the DVSA active-station list covers England, Scotland and Wales only; in Northern Ireland, the DVA operates the test-centre network and nidirect lists those centres. Do not use the Great Britain list to verify a Northern Ireland repair garage or imply that a garage preparing a vehicle there issues the MOT result.

Separate the Great Britain and Northern Ireland MOT routes

For England, Scotland and Wales, GOV.UK says an MOT must be carried out at an approved MOT test centre, identified by the blue sign with three white triangles. Sources: [1]

DVSA publishes an active-station list for England, Scotland and Wales with the station name, address, telephone number and vehicle classes tested. Sources: [2]

DVSA says that list is updated every three months and warns that a station may have opened or closed since the latest update. Sources: [2]

For Northern Ireland, the Department for Infrastructure identifies vehicle testing as a DVA operation and says there are 15 driver and vehicle testing centres; nidirect publishes the centres and the vehicle tests carried out at each one. Sources: [3] [4]

What to do

  • In England, Scotland or Wales, use the DVSA list to confirm MOT authorisation and the class of vehicle tested.
  • In Northern Ireland, use nidirect to choose a DVA test centre. Do not search the DVSA list for a Northern Ireland garage: a repair garage that prepares the vehicle is separate from the DVA centre that carries out the test.

  • Treat Great Britain MOT authorisation, or a Northern Ireland DVA test-centre listing, only as evidence about MOT testing for the listed vehicle class. Neither proves that a repair diagnosis or quote is right.

Verify a Trading Standards scheme listing

What to do

  • Search the live directory for Car Repairs / Servicing or MOTs and your location.
  • Open the current business entry rather than relying on a logo shown on the garage’s own website.
  • A current entry supports only that this scheme lists the named business and makes its stated vetting claim; the directory is not a complete national register of repair garages.
  • Ask what complaint process applies to the specific listing before you authorise work.

Read IMI recognition at person level

The IMI says its Professional Register lists individual members and their place of work, and recognises their achievements, experience, professionalism, professional behaviours and keeping knowledge and skills current through continuing professional development. Sources: [6]

What to do

  • Use the member, business or location search to find the individual’s live register entry, then check the workplace and recognition shown there; a workplace field is not an IMI accreditation of the whole garage.
  • For an EV, hybrid or ADAS job, ask who will do the work and whether that person’s live register entry shows the relevant TechSafe category.
  • Do not treat an individual membership, recognition or logo as a diagnosis, quote or guarantee.

Agree the job before work starts

Checklist

  • The fault code, symptoms and warning-light state the garage received.
  • Whether the first charge is for diagnosis only or includes repair work.
  • A written estimate showing labour, parts, VAT and any calibration or consumables.
  • Whether parts will be new, remanufactured or used.
  • A price or approval limit above which the garage must contact you.
  • The expected completion date and what happens if more faults are found.
  • The warranty and complaint or alternative-dispute-resolution route.
